Global Elite Awards had the pleasure of speaking with Bjorn Decock, Owner of Pure Sea Boutique Lodge, following the property’s recognition as the Leading Luxury Boutique Coastal Lodge in South Africa 2026. In our conversation, Bjorn shared the coastal vision behind Pure Sea, the extraordinary Walker Bay setting, the three-year owner-led craft that shaped the property, and the philosophy of intimate hospitality that defines every stay.
A Coastal Vision in a Country Defined by Bush Lodges
When most travellers imagine a luxury lodge in South Africa, they picture the bush. Pure Sea Boutique Lodge was created to offer something entirely different, a sanctuary shaped by the ocean rather than the savannah.
“The ocean, the soothing sound and movement of the waves, the abundant marine life create an experience unlike anything the bush can offer. While both environments are extraordinary, each provides a unique way to connect with nature,” Bjorn explains.
Set on a rare estate just a two-hour scenic drive from Cape Town International Airport, Pure Sea welcomes guests with sweeping coastal and mountain views from the moment their journey begins.
“From the moment guests begin their drive, they are immersed in spectacular scenery. Upon arriving at Pure Sea, they are welcomed by the owners, a sense of peace, tranquillity, and natural beauty. It is truly a home far away from home,” he shares.
Walker Bay: A Coastline That Performs
The stretch of coast on which Pure Sea sits is one of the most extraordinary in the world. Walker Bay offers a rare convergence of mountains, ocean, and marine life that few coastlines can rival.
“Where mountains, ocean, and wildlife meet in perfect harmony, experience a coastal sanctuary where nature performs just for you. Walker Bay is a rare paradise offering an unforgettable blend of dramatic landscapes, peaceful waters, and world-class wildlife viewing,” Bjorn says.
One of the most striking gifts of the location is the daily spectacle unfolding on the horizon. Unlike most coastlines, the bay’s geography places the sun directly in front of the property every single evening.
“Watch the sunset all year round as it dips below the ocean horizon, painting the sky behind the majestic, jagged outlines of the local mountain ranges,” he shares.
During the season, the bay becomes a natural nursery for Southern Right Whales, allowing guests to watch these gentle giants breach and play from their private terraces. Sheltered by the sweeping coastline, the ocean here is remarkably calm, warmed by gentle currents, and easy to swim in on warmer days.
Owner-Led Intimacy at the Heart of the Boutique Experience
At Pure Sea, boutique is not a marketing word. It is a way of operating. As owner-operators, Bjorn and his team are personally present in every element of the guest experience.
“At Pure Sea, luxury is personal, private, and meticulously crafted. As owner-operators, we work directly alongside our dedicated team every day to ensure our exacting standards are flawlessly maintained,” Bjorn explains.
That closeness is expressed in the smallest of gestures, from the personal welcome on arrival to the quiet farewell at departure, and in the deliberate decisions the lodge chooses not to make.
“We are always there to personally welcome you upon arrival and bid you a fond farewell when you leave. Throughout your stay, we remain actively hands-on behind the scenes to guarantee perfection, yet entirely unobtrusive giving you the space to feel completely at home,” he shares.
To protect the atmosphere of the property, Pure Sea remains strictly closed to the general public. Only resident guests may use the beach picnic areas, the hot tub, or move through the grounds, ensuring that every space feels like a private oasis.
Architecture and Design Born From the Landscape
The architecture of Pure Sea Boutique Lodge is inseparable from the coastal fynbos and the dramatic Walker Bay landscape that surrounds it. Every material, every line, every window has been chosen to bring the ocean into the room.
“Immerse yourself in a sanctuary where architecture and nature coexist in perfect harmony. Designed with an eco-friendly mindset, Pure Sea blends minimalist living with biophilic style, creating an environment of understated elegance, high-end comfort, and flawless indoor-outdoor flow,” Bjorn describes.
Every spacious room features floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a private veranda, so the ocean is present from the moment a guest wakes up until they drift asleep beneath the stars. Yet what truly sets the property apart is how it was made.
“Pure Sea is not just a building, it is a deeply personal work of art. Emerging from a pure vision of coastal luxury, built and decorated from the ground up completely by us, the owners. Without the involvement of outside architects or interior designers, every single line, corner, and texture was born directly from our hearts,” he explains.
The build itself took three years of dedicated, hands-on craftsmanship, driven by a refusal to compromise on any detail. Bjorn hand-selected the raw, earthy textures and, together with his team, personally designed and built much of the bespoke furniture. The result is a property with a rare soul, structural integrity, and depth of character that commercial developments simply cannot replicate.
A Kitchen Anchored in the Sea
Cuisine at Pure Sea is guided by one uncompromising philosophy: absolute freshness. Every dish is prepared to order, using pristine, sustainably sourced ingredients that honour the region.
“At Pure Sea, culinary excellence is defined by one core philosophy: absolute freshness. From sunrise to sunset, every single dish is prepared to order using pristine, sustainably sourced ingredients that showcase the rich bounty of our local region,” Bjorn shares.
The property’s location next to Gansbaai, the historic heart of South African fishing village culture, allows the team to visit the harbour daily and hand-select the finest catch straight from the boats. For meat lovers, dinner options showcase the world-renowned quality of premium South African cuts, expertly prepared to highlight local culinary heritage.
Hospitality That Feels Like Coming Home
What guests remember most, according to Bjorn, is not simply the setting or the design, but the feeling of coming home. Pure Sea is built around the belief that true luxury lies in being fully cared for without ever feeling watched over.
“What truly sets Pure Sea apart is not just our breathtaking location or our beautiful eco-design, it is the feeling of coming home. Our dedicated team is devoted to wrapping you in warmth and comfort, creating a soulful sanctuary where you can fully unwind and simply be,” he says.
The atmosphere is designed to allow guests to do absolutely nothing and feel completely fulfilled by it.
“From the moment you step through our doors, the outside world fades away. We have designed an atmosphere so deeply relaxing that doing absolutely nothing here brings pure, unadulterated happiness,” Bjorn shares.
That standard is protected by the owners’ daily involvement in every aspect of the guest experience, from breakfast preparation to working side by side with the team.
“At Pure Sea, our staff understands that your presence is a privilege. Every guest is treated with the utmost care, respect, and attentiveness. Your needs are seamlessly anticipated and gracefully served, ensuring your time with us is completely effortless,” he adds.
A Quiet Revolution Ahead of Its Time
Long before the global travel industry embraced small, personal, boutique lodging, Pure Sea was already building exactly that. Bjorn views the property’s intimate scale not as a response to a trend but as a deliberate act of foresight.
“The global travel industry shifted dramatically toward small boutique lodges with a deeply personal touch, as modern travelers began seeking authentic, small-scale sanctuaries over large commercial resorts. At Pure Sea Boutique Lodge, we didn’t adapt to this trend, we envisioned it,” he explains.
That vision translated into a deliberate decision to limit the property to just four exclusive, spacious suites, and to place biophilic design and owner-led service at the heart of the experience long before the industry recognised their value.
“We knew that true luxury could never be mass-produced, it requires an intentionally small footprint where time slows down, allowing the rhythms of nature to set the pace,” Bjorn shares.
Looking ahead, Pure Sea continues to evolve, with an annual winter closure dedicated to hands-on maintenance and the sculpting of new architectural corners and lounges designed to deepen the guest’s connection with the surrounding landscape.
“Pure Sea has never been just a holiday destination, it is an emotional awakening. We created this beachfront oasis specifically to move something within our guests, to touch their souls, and to give them a space to heal,” he says.
Setting a New Standard for Coastal Luxury in South Africa
Pure Sea Boutique Lodge’s recognition at the Global Elite Awards is a tribute to a rare kind of hospitality: one built by hand, guided by the landscape, and rooted in the belief that true luxury is intimate, personal, and healing. In a category increasingly defined by scale, Pure Sea stands as a reminder that the most memorable escapes are the smallest.
